Getting Started

Rock Climbing

The quickest way to climb mountains is taking a class on climbing. Veteran guides can teach the basics of safety, technique, protection, and assessment. They will give information about health risks, first aid, what to wear etc.

A great way to begin the lessons is with bouldering. In this style of climbing a boulder or rock face a few meter high is used for practicing hanging, pro placement, roping techniques and more. Rock Climbing

Trad or traditional climbing uses topes, harnesses, pitons, cams etc for safety. Sport climbing is also popular using pre-placed bolts and other gear and climbers can concentrate on climbing not technicalities. Ice climbing is extreme and aid climbing is intense.

Good teachers will share with you advice, personal stories and interesting locations. They might have climbed and been to the Canadian Rockies, El Capitan, South Dakota, Alps and Scotland. Rock Climbing

It is the prerogative of instructors to ensure that you know how to top rope, how to place cams and nuts, how to belay and rappel. They will also see to it that you know good foot work and get practiced on the climbing wall. They will teach you locking carabiners, different kinds of harness and plenty of guidance for you t o practice yourself.

If you are planning a visit to snow packed or earthquake prone areas many teachers will give advice about risks, what to expect, what to avoid.

Browse through the Internet for instructors in your neighborhood, inquire among friends and give a try to a few climbing gyms. Get information from climbing schools and travel guides about planned trips to the mountains. You are bound to come across something that would be suitable for you. The sooner you complete your search the faster you will be able to fulfill your dream of pursuing a life of adventure through the very thrilling mountain climbing. Rock Climbing
